  • Thirteen piano keys respond to a touch or a foot, so a toddler can play it crawling, sitting, standing or jumping.
  • Six instrument voices sit behind icons on the mat: piano, violin, accordion, trumpet, vibraphone and guitar, each a different colour of sound.
  • Turn it over and the drum side arrives with two sticks, which is the first time most toddlers hold a tool to make a noise on purpose.
  • Eight animal sounds are scattered across the surface, close enough together that stepping across the mat composes something by accident.
  • Non-woven fabric folds down to a flat rectangle, and the battery compartment closes with a screw.

Why we made it this way

Between one and two, a toddler is learning that their own body causes things. A music mat is unusually good at this because the feedback is instant and the whole floor is the instrument; there is no right way to hold it and nothing to knock over.

It is built for two players. One adult and one toddler on opposite ends of the mat produces call and response without anybody explaining the idea, and that turn-taking is doing more for language than the music is.

Practically, it folds. A mat that lives rolled behind a door gets brought out for an afternoon and put away, which in our experience keeps a noisy toy welcome for a lot longer than one that never leaves the floor.
